About OHA Insurance Solutions
OHA Insurance
Solutions, Inc. (OHAIS) was created by the
Ohio Hospital Association
(OHA) in 2003 to help bring long-term availability, predictability and
stability to the Ohio medical professional liability marketplace for
hospitals and physicians. OHAIS, a hospital-owned company, strives to ensure
all Ohioans have access to health care by enabling Ohio’s physicians and
hospitals access to medical malpractice insurance.
Ohio hospitals and physicians in all specialties and in general practice are
eligible to apply for medical liability coverage through OHAIS.
The company was capitalized through an investment from OHA, with remaining
investments coming from qualified investors, mainly Ohio hospitals.
BENEFITS of OHAIS
Strong Capital Base
As a new company, OHAIS is not rated by A.M. Best but it has a strong
capital base and a conservative capitalization method. As of January
2006, OHA Holdings, Inc., the parent of OHAIS, has over $23 million in
capital, attained by contributions from OHA and 52 OHA member hospitals,
both small and large. As a new company, there is no past experience to
erode the capital base.
Experienced Team
of Associates
Each member of OHAIS’ management team has over 30 years of experience in the
medical professional liability insurance industry. The underwriting staff
averages over 20 years in the insurance industry with over 15 years
specializing in the medical professional liability segment.
Experienced
Board-Level Support
The Board of Directors of OHAIS includes senior executives from OHA member
hospitals experienced in medical professional liability programs; leadership
of the Ohio State Medical
Association (OSMA); the CFO of a leading regional insurance group and
senior executives from OHA. Physicians are also represented. The Board of
Directors of OHA Holdings, Inc., the parent of OHAIS, is comprised of CEOs
and other senior executives from OHA member hospitals.
Risk Management
OHAIS has an aggressive position with respect to
risk
management initiatives. In addition to standard programs, OHAIS will be
utilizing resources of OHA and the
Ohio Patient
Safety Institute (a partnership of OHA and OSMA) to develop innovative
programs to help our insureds reduce medical errors and improve patient
safety and patient communication.
Commitment to
Service
OHAIS, as a new company, has the ability and the commitment to be responsive
and flexible in its service to its insureds.
Credibility Within
Insurance Industry
OHAIS, because of its experienced associates and the strength of OHA, has a
high level of credibility with OHA member hospitals, reinsurers, defense
attorneys and the insurance industry in general. This credibility has proven
to be a significant asset in the establishment of the company’s policies and
procedures and its reinsurance program.
Competitive
Programs and Premiums
OHAIS’ insurance premiums and coverages are competitive with other insurers
providing these coverages in Ohio. OHAIS is locally owned by Ohio healthcare
providers and has the advantage of being 100 percent committed to the Ohio
marketplace for a long-term view that is not motivated by profit.
OHA Track Record
The Ohio Hospital Association
has a history of involvement in the Ohio medical professional liability
marketplace. In 1978, it created the
Ohio Hospital Insurance Company
(OHIC). OHIC was sold in 1997 to New York based HUM, later acquired by MLMIC.
The sale of OHIC was a business decision — it provided OHA with the $10
million they invested in OHAIS and it generated a significant investment
return to those Ohio hospitals that held OHIC stock.
